Hero of the Nile, Limmer Lane, Felpham
Joseph Bishop May ran this beer shop, which once stood behind the present post office on the site now occupied by interwar housing. May was a brewer at Felpham by 1838 and continued as a beer retailer until at least 1845 and probably until his death in 1850. The hero celebrated in the name of the house was Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson, who had led the British fleet to victory over a French force commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte in the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
