Military Medal (MM)
Awarded to personnel of the British Army, and formerly also to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land.
First established by King George V, 25 March 1916. ‘It is ordained that the names of those upon whom We may be pleased to confer the Military Medal shall be published in the London Gazette, and that a Register thereof shall be kept in the Office of Our Principal Secretary of State for War.’ (Gazette supplement 3647)

EADE, WILLIAM JOHN, M.M., Private, No. 1180, 7th (Service) Battn.The Royal Sussex Regt., s. of the late John Eade of Stella Cottage, Bognor, by his wife, Mary Ann, dau. of William Veasy, b. Bognor, co. Sussex, 24 Sept. 1879; educ Roman Catholic School there; was a Builder; enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regt. 9 Dec. 1914 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from March, 1916; was wounded at Poperinghe 18 July, 1917, and invalided home; returned to France 9th Nov., and was killed in action near Mailly-Maillet, north-west of Albert 20 May, 1918. Buried in the cemetery there. His Coy. Sergt. -Major wrote: “He will be greatly missed. He was a thorough soldier and a man, and was liked by all he came in contact with. He will be a very great loss to me; he was my batman, and was a brave man as an orderly”. He was awarded the M.M. (London Gazette, 8 March, 1918), for bravery in the field. He m. at st. Mary’s Bognor, 27 Sept., 1905 Jane Selina (St. John’s, Link Avenue, Felpham), dau. of Stephen Sparkes, and had a dau., Mary Magdalene, b. 11 Aug. 1914.
