In 2015 at the Felpham Village October History talk the speaker the late Sue Tressler an Archivist and Village History Group member said: “History is not just about the past, we are making history as we speak.”
It is important to record what is happening now and what has happened in the recent past. Look at the changes during our lifetime and record them for our children and grandchildren.”
These comments generated the information for 2016 Felpham Village October History Talk ‘A Walk Through Time’ and by starting the development of a ‘Time Line’ for Felpham.
The research produced by the group for the talk related to the shops and businesses in the Parish of Felpham in 2015-16 and members linked it to evidence from members’ own recollections and through a Silver Jubilee Programme of 1976 which contained advertisements for most of the shops and businesses in the Parish and from information found in 1976 Kelly’s Directory.
The possible loss of the Felpham Village Post Office & Stores was the catalyst for some of the work on display at the 2024 Felpham Village Conservation Fete. The posters provided some images of past and present shops, businesses and key buildings and it reflected much that had changed or been lost over recent time. [Marion Brooks]
